Earned points ÷ possible points

Points-based grade calculator

Use this when your course adds points across assignments, rather than assigning fixed percentages to categories. Keep ungraded work distinct from a missed assignment recorded as zero.

iEstimates use only the rules you enter. The example grade-point scale is a U.S. college 4.0 model, not any school’s official policy or a local grading system.

Possible points must be greater than zero. An ungraded item is excluded from the current grade.

How total-points grading works

Current grade = points earned on graded and missing items ÷ points possible on those items. Predicted final grade = all earned points, including scenario estimates, ÷ all possible points. An ungraded assignment is left out of the current denominator.

Worked example

A quiz is 18/20, a project is ungraded out of 80. Current grade: 18 ÷ 20 = 90%. With 72 project points, scenario A final is (18 + 72) ÷ 100 = 90%. With 56, scenario B is 74%.

Do not use this model if your syllabus gives categories fixed weights: use weighted course scenarios. Read how to tell the two methods apart. No letter grade is inferred from the resulting percentage.
